  • 6th Grade Language Arts: Throughout the year, students focus on correct grammar usage. This is reinforced through diagramming sentences, studying mentor sentences and writing essays.  This year, students will also be working in the Glencoe Grammar Workbook. Students also practice grammar using the online program No Red Ink

6th Grade Reading: Novel studies include Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift, A Christmas Carol, Freak the Mighty and The Giver. Students also read and analyze non-fiction texts. Students analyze their reading using the RACE format which focuses on citing and explaining text evidence and improve comprehension and other skills by working in the SRA classroom laboratory. Sixth graders are also responsible for reading independently and completing book reports each trimester. The War That Saved my Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is assigned summer reading; students must summarize every chapter in 5 bullet points.

8th Grade Reading: Students read a variety of texts including Twelfth Night, Night and To KIll a Mockingbird; short story and poetry units are also included. Work includes analyzing literary elements, writing extended responses and recognizing how the author develops the characters and plots through specific quotes. Students read independently and work in the SRA classroom laboratory.

8th Grade Religion:  Students prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. The 8th grade class supports the Friends of the Kenyan Orphanage through their annual Lollipops for Love valentine sale.
